William Price of Cwrt Farm, Felindre, Swansea chats to RDP officer Sian Green re the acquisition of the farm by his family, current produce and farm diversification

Description

William: We bought this farm in late 1978, to move in early 1979, we were in a farm in Pontardawe for six years before that. I was 4 and a half when we moved to this one. Both my parents came from farming backgrounds with generations well before that all farming. I have got three brothers, we all grew up in a farm, but as farming is, you can only have an income from one family being on the farm. So I am the one that has ended up on the farm.
We got 115 acres where we are, we got another 60, maybe 65 away in Brecon, and recently, and we've rented another 50 acres, that’s in Pontarddulais just down the road from us.
We are mainly beef, we've got a few sheep, we grow our own cereals. We used to grow potatoes and veg. We've stopped growing potatoes now, two years ago, and this is probably our last season of growing veg, mainly through just so labour intensive, and my children are grown up and we just haven't got their help on the farm to have the time to do it. So…we've gone for diversification because of that, and set up a campsite this year, just call Panoramic Camping and Glamping.
Interviewer Sian Green: So, when…when is that going to be opening then?
William : We opened that ..third week of July this year, so just in time for the summer holidays. A bit slow to start off, but it got really busy for the summer holidays and then it’s gone a bit quieter now. It's mainly pitch up bookings now for the rest of the season.
