Boer War pipe

Description

This pipe is carved on all sides. On the right side is the word "Boer" and the year "1899"; on the left side is the word "War", and the year "1900". The years "1901" and "1902" appear on the pipe's bottom. On the front of the bowl the carver has inset a South African Republic silver 3 pence piece showing the bust of Paul ("Oom Paul") Kruger, President of the Republic. Obviously the reverse of the coin, which holds the date, is not visible; but it must be between 1892 and 1897 since they were struck only during that short period. Also on the front of the pipe, below the coin, are the initials G. H. W. Around the top of the bowl there is a knurled ring, which when turned moves a windcap across the bowl to prevent hot ash from being blown out. The pipe also has an unusual forked stem.
