Claudia, Elizabeth and Mary Davies. Hidden Histories: Women’s Peace Stories
As communities and volunteers have been transcribing the 390,296 signatories from the 1923 Welsh Women’s Peace Petition to America, many have been identifying and uncovering the stories behind this generation of women who stood against war. Who were they – and what messages might they have for us 100 years later.
‘Hidden Histories’ project led by the WCIA invited people across Wales to uncover and share ‘peace stories’ behind the 390,296 women who signed the Peace Petition – not just ‘the great and the good’, but the thousands of ordinary women across Wales moved in the aftermath of World War One to petition for peace.
This story and supporting material was contributed by Angharad Tomos, that explored the history of the sisters of her great grandmother, Claudia, Elizabeth and Mary Davies

Yn bocs 13, dois ar draws 3 chwaer i fy hen nain o 79 High St, Pwllheli (siop Ironmongers). Claudia, Mary ac Elizabeth Davies (roedd 5 chwaer i gyd). Byddent wedi priodi erbyn 1923, ond diddorol iddynt ddefnyddio eu henwau cyn priodi, a rhoi 79 fel eu cyfeiriad.
Mary Catherine oedd yr hynaf, ganed yn 1861, a chafodd ei hanfon i ysgol yn Bury i gael ei haddysg. Wnaeth hi ddim priodi. Mae llun y siop ar ddiwedd y lluniau hyn, ond mae Mary wedi rwbio ei hun o’r llun, roedd ganddi ‘facial paralysis’.
Claudia Annie oedd merch rhif 4 ac mae llun ohoni hi efo Mary. Fe’i ganed yn 1870. Cafodd addysg yn Llundain. Priododd y Capten David Seaborn Davies a chawsant fab, Dewi Seaborne Davies. Daeth yn ddarlithydd ym Mhrifysgol Lerpwl a bu’n aelod seneddol Rhyddfrydol am 4 mis wedi Lloyd George.
Elizabeth Grace Davies yw’r olaf (y llun ar ei phen ei hun). Fe’i ganed yn 1882 a chafodd addysg yn Stafford. Priododd gyfreithiwr - arhosodd y dair ym Mhwllheli.
Symudodd fy hen nain i Fethesda, a bu farw yn 1915.
