Alfred Holt and Company (Blue Funnel Line)
Alfred Holt and Company, trading as Blue Funnel Line, was a UK shipping company, founded in 1866 and based in Liverpool. It was one of the UK's larger ship owning and operating companies, remaining in business for 122 years and as such had a significant role in the country's overseas trade. They operated throughout both world wars, losing a total of 46 ships to enemy action.
Ships of the Blue Funnel fleet all had names from classical Greek legend or history. They were distinguished by their blue painted funnels. The majority were cargo ships with limited capacity for passengers.
Many of the ships were manned by seamen from north Wales, many of whom would have passed through the Blue Funnel Seamanship School at Odyssey Works, Birkenhead. They became known as the ‘Welsh Navy’.
The museum has an extensive display of artefacts connected with the Blue Funnel Line, many of which were donated by ex-seafarers of the company.
