Trench art shell case - Sergeant Spiller WW1

Description

These two photographs show a brass shell casing dating from World War One. The inscriptions read ' Sergt F Spiller' and 'Monchy' and 'June 1917'. Sergt Spiller was the father of Alfred Spiller, who served in the Royal Navy from 1957 to 1966. Alfred met and married a Wren, Elsie Robinson. Elsie survives Alfred and the shell case has passed on to her. Elsie is now the custodian of the shell casing. It is believed the inscription 'Monchy' relates to a significant action on the Arras battlefield at the village of Monchy Le Preux at Easter time in 1917.
