This is a photograph of a Royal Navy Sailor undertaking an adventure training exercise on Mount Etna whilst visiting Sicily from Valetta, Malta in the early 1960's. The sailor pictured here is Petty Officer Gwyn Davies and he is nearing the summit ridge of the Volcano. Hiking was a popular method of seeing the sights, whilst keeping the Sailors fir and healthy in Mediterranean fleet in the 1960s.
