This is a photograph of five off duty Royal Navy Sailors on shore leave exploring Sicily about 1961/62. Gwyn Davies is positioned second from the right looking onto the photograph and the photo appears in his collection online at the West Wales Veterans Archive on the Peoples Collection Wales website. It is quite possible that this photograph was taken just before the group set off to climb the slopes of Etna. A photograph in Gwyn's collection shows him on the upper slopes dressed in very similar clothing. At the time this photograph was taken these sailors were all based at the British Navy base in Malta.
