Candle-snuff Fungus by April Beynon

Description

Scientific Name:Xylaria hypoxylon
Fungi facts:The Candlesnuff fungus is very characteristic because it has erect upright black branches which terminate in a white tip giving the appearance of the wick of a candle. The whitish distal end is due to the production of the asexual spores (in spring) and these are replaced later in the year by the production of the sexual spores from little flask like structures. It is found growing on the stumps and branches of rotten wood of deciduous trees. It is very weakly luminescent.
Technique:Appliqué and hand stitching on a hand coloured background
