Ernie Hughes - RAF National Service 1952 - 1957

This is a collection of items that document the service in the Royal Air Force of Mr Ernest Hughes from Penparcau, Aberystwyth. 'Ernie' was called up for National Service in January 1952. He entered the RAF and decided to sign a 5-year contract of service, in order to serve in his chosen trade of 'Firefighter'.  After completing basic training at RAF Bridgnorth and Fire and rescue training at Sutton on Hull, he was posted to RAF Llandwrog. There after he served overseas for nearly three years at RAF Eastleigh in Kenya. Ernie talks about his experiences in a video that appears in this collection. *** Caution the video films contain descriptions of aircraft crashes and incidents which some viewers may find upsetting. This material supports the work of the West Wales Veterans Archive National Service project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
